Platinum Izumo Shikkoku Chikuringunkozu (Tiger in the Bamboo Forest) Fountain Pen, PIZ-150000C#1

The Izumo series launched  in 2010 by Shunichi Nakata, the founder of Platinum Pen, with the help of local craftsmen and the cooperation of officials from Izumo City in Shimane Prefecture. The name was chosen to acknowledge the birthplace of the founder.

The Platinum Izumo Shikkoku Chikuringunkozu (tiger in the bamboo forest) fountain pen is the latest addition to Platinum’s shikkoku collection.

A variety of techniques are used on this pen making it an outstanding example of Japanese superb craftsmanship. On the barrel of this fountain pen, a motif of a tiger with crossed front legs emerging from the bamboo forest is drawn over the jet-black matte body using time-intensive sumikoage taka maki-e technique.

The use of several layers of charcoal powder, called shoen, is applied to give the images more volume and richness, three-dimensional look. A natural black lacquer, Kuro roiro urushi, is used to highlight the eyes, mouth, and stripes of the tiger. The more this pen is used, image of the tiger will become glossier. Not only the three dimension image of a tiger can be seen from the pen, but can be felt as well.

The tiger was considered a legendary creature since it was never seen in Japan. Due to its powerful image, the tiger has been favored by warriors since ancient times as a symbol of strength. The tiger in the bamboo forest represents living freely and boldly without restraint. Both the bamboo and tiger are thought to drive out evil spirits, and are known for their strength and resilience.

The initial production of 600 pens will come with a serial number written in kanji on the barrel of each pen.

The Platinum Century Black Tiger Limited Edition fountain pen is equipped with a large ruthenium-plated 18k gold nib available in F, M, and B points.

This is a mid-size pen that will be a comfortable fit. Included with the pen is an exclusive hand-painted Maki-e converter for Izumo shikkoku series with a matte black finish to match the pen.

The pen comes with a unique black paulownia wood box decorated with kanji script. Also included is a 30mL bottle of blue-black ink, and a single pen pouch, an ink converter and one blue black cartridge.
